Rough diamonds form over eons of time, 90-140 miles (about 1,600 km) below the Earth's surface. Extreme heat and pressure cause carbon atoms to fuse together and cool rapidly into crystals. These crystals are known as rough diamonds, or raw diamonds.
Rough diamonds usually look like chunks of pale, colored glass. While colorless or near-colorless diamonds are the norm for cut, faceted, and polished diamonds, rough diamonds often carry some hint of color. This color usually occurs when trace elements of other minerals were present in small amounts during formation.
